Piper Laurie: Hollywood Icon with Three Oscar Nominations, Star of ‘Carrie’ and ‘The Hustler’ Passes Away at 91

Piper Laurie

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Piper Laurie, the immensely talented actress who achieved recognition and acclaim beyond the constraints of the studio system, gathering three Oscar nominations over her illustrious career. At the age of 91, Laurie’s journey came to an end, an event confirmed by her manager, Marion Rosenberg, who lovingly referred to her as “a beautiful human being.

Laurie’s acting prowess first drew industry recognition in 1961 with her Oscar-nominated depiction of an alcoholic in “The Hustler,” alongside Paul Newman. Her realistic portrayal struck accord, especially when she implied both of them were struggling, and it might be best to part ways. Unexpectedly, she retreated from acting for some years to focus on building a family but reemerged in the mid-70s, delivering remarkable performances that included her Oscar-nominated roles in “Carrie” and “Children of a Lesser God.”

The chilling depiction of a mother with a unique and demented perception of religion in “Carrie,” bagged her another Oscar nomination. Her performance as Catherine Martell, the machinating power-seeker in the groundbreaking TV series “Twin Peaks,” was another standout, earning her two of her nine Emmy nominations. It was her role in the compelling “Promises,” a 1986 “Hallmark Hall of Fame” entry, that won her an Emmy.

Proving her versatility, Laurie’s final Emmy nomination came for her guest role in the sitcom “Frasier” in 1999, where she portrayed the parent of a radio psychologist, an unmistakable nod to Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

Laurie’s stubborn spirit and never-fading determination catalyzed her departure from Universal in the mid-50s, post which she delivered a powerful performance in Robert Wise’s “Until They Sail.” She subsequently relocated to New York and tackled television productions including “Twelfth Night” and “Caesar and Cleopatra,” earning Emmy nominations.

Following her impressive contribution to entertainment, Laurie decided to focus on family life, marrying Joseph Morgenstern and moving to Woodstock, N.Y. However, her love for acting drew her back to the scene by the mid-70s. Her myriad performances include seminal roles in Brian De Palma’s “Carrie” and a string of TV movies.

Towards the late 80s and 90s, Laurie lent her talent to a variety of big-screen ventures. Among her final film appearances were “Eulogy” and “Hesher.” She remained active up till the 1990s and 2000s, appearing on TV series such as “ER” and “Law and Order: SVU.”

Born as Rosetta Jacobs on January 22, 1932, in Detroit, Laurie was discovered at Los Angeles High School when she was 17. Despite the initial stream of undistinguished comedies and musicals under Universal, she held on, using these projects as stepping stones to more rewarding ventures.

Piper Laurie leaves behind a legacy of acting excellence and a daughter, Anne Grace, after her divorce from Morgenstern in 1981. The world of entertainment mourns the loss of the exceptional Piper Laurie. Her performances continue to resonate with fans and will ensure her talent lives on.
